Use What You Got and Stop Envying

Firearms

We hear it all the time; the amateur photographer who just needs the latest camera to help him take better photos. Or in business when the owner says, “If i was able to buy X, than I could use it in so many ways to drive business in”. Then, after he gets it, he’s happy for a few days or weeks, but then doesn’t use it any longer.

I’m sure we all know someone like this, and I admit, I’m that way also. My current desire is for a Glock 19. If I only had that gun, then I’d be able to better protect myself. If I only had that gun, then I’d be able to better equip myself with interchangeable magazines and vast array of customizations you can do with a Glock. The thing that I have to keep in mind though, is that even if I had a Glock, my basic understanding of tactial movements, common sense, and shooting ability wouldn’t improve just because of the weapon I had. Just as a photographer’s eye doesn’t get better with more expensive equipment. It takes baby steps to become a professional at anything and in the meantime, we should be concentrating on being proficient with the tools we already have at our disposal.

A month ago I took my Taurus (which I’ve been trying to sell to help pay for the Glock) to my first ever IDPA match. I didn’t know what to expect, so my Springfield XD tagged along for the ride, just in case. While at the match I used up 55 rounds of ammo ($11 +tax worth). It wasn’t great ammo, it was the $10 boxes at Walmart, just like I’ve been shooting through it for the past year. After all was said and done, a funny thing happened… I was able to out-score plenty of the guys there that used their XDs, Glocks and outside the waistband holsters. While I understand that IDPA isn’t intended to be a competition against your peers, it sure made me feel good about my current every day carry choice with IWB holster. Though I’m still waiting to get my Glock 19, I’m happy that my Taurus performed without a hiccup.
