The Simplicity of Awareness
One of the first concepts in any self defense or personal protection class is to simply be aware of what is going on around you. This concept alone can save you from being a possible victim, yet many people walk around simply unaware. Colonel Jeff Cooper has created a system by which you can determine your state of readiness (aka: awareness). Use the info below to determine what color you’re usually in and what it takes to get to the next state.
Code White
You have a peaceful feeling and think you’re secure; whether you are or not. You have no awareness of the things around you. You are the perfect prey for attackers!
Code Yellow
You are aware of what is going on. You are relaxed, yet ready for the unexpected. You know who is behind you and you realize you’re approaching an alleyway, so you step away from the buildings and take a wide approach. You are much less of a target in this state; which you should spend most of your time in!
Code Orange
There is a potential threat and you may be in danger. You are alert and analyzing the situation to identify all attackers, starting with the most immediate threat. You are looking for an escape route and potential weapons to use in case the situation escalates. Make a decision!
Code Red
You are in conflict. You must flee, defend or attack to survive. Carry out the decision you made in code orange, since you were prepared ahead of time. If force needs to be used, only use the level of force appropriate to the threat.
Keeping the awareness color systcanon mind may someday save your life. Remember to be aware of your surroundings and to be prepared if a situation occurs.
