Ruger LCP
At only 9.4 ounces (plus ammo), I’m assuming that the Ruger LCP is a sheer pleasure to carry. Unfortunately I can only speculate from firing the gun and hearing rave reviews about it. While most of my knowledge about the LCP has come from internet reviews, I must say that my sources are rock solid professionals that are not paid by the manufacturers to give their opinions. One of the online professionals I respect is Nutnfancy on YouTube. He has rated the Ruger LCP a 9 out of 10, with it’s main philosophy of use being as an officer’s backup gun or a civilian’s primary carry gun. Nutnfancy’s final verdict: “Overall it’s an impressive little gun that sets a new standard for super compact pistols that can comfortably and reliably serve as part of your personal defense systems.” It’s basically an ankle-carrier’s dream come true!
Like all firearms however, the LCP does come with some downfalls, which we’d like to mention for the sake of being truly honest; so here goes…
- Sights are really low profile, making it hard to acquire targets quickly.
- The gun is so small that it has a snappy kick. If you’re not an avid shooter with strong wrists, it can be bothersome.
- 6+1 Capacity = Pack a spare magazine.
- There have been reports that the mag release can be accidentally pressed due to it’s position, but this is true for most mini-pistols of this size.
- .380 ammo is more expensive than 9mm, and is less effective in self defense scenarios.

While I’d really like to own one… I am still finding it difficult to consider carrying anything less than a 9mm; even though it doesn’t matter as long as it’s with you and you can hit something with it. << I'm just too comfortable with my Glock 19 to fork over $300 + training time and ammo. I also don't want to have to bother with stocking another caliber of ammo; especially when it's more expensive.
I have owned mine for almost a year, and I felt the same way about the 9mm VS the 380. The stopping power difference is insignificant in my opinion. I carry my LCP in all my clothes and is always on me unless I am in the swimming pool
Grab a 9mm round and put is side by side to a .380 (aka 9mm short) and there is not much difference. And the great equalizer is good self defense HP’s.
I agree a 9mm is cheaper to shoot and does have more power behind it. I just like the tiny size of the LCP, and realistically, if I ever need a firearm in a defense way, we will (statistically speaking) be within 5 yards of each other and the bad guy will probably not be able to tell the difference if he was hit with a 9mm or a .380. Just my opinion.
And the perfect compromise is the new LC9.
