Kholster to Versa Max 2 IWB Transition: Part 1

Firearms Self Defense

I’m in the process of transferring from carrying a Glock 19 in a Kholster full moon holster to using a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 IWB (in-the-waistband) holster. Understandably, whenever you try out a new holster, it’s always going to feel different than what you’re used to. Sometimes you’d rather stick with what has worked for you instead of being annoyed for a brief time while you break the new holster in.

I’ve used a Kholster for over a year (first with a Taurus 24/7, then with a Springfield XD9, then a Glock 19). The only reason I’ve decided to move on is because Ive known since I started using Kholsters that I couldn’t get a proper grip on the firearm because of the large leather piece behind it. My fingers just couldn’t grip around it properly. Also, I was looking for a more professional and durable holster to try out, and the Versa Max 2 had some great reviews on YouTube by some trust-worthy people.

About six months after placing my order with Milt Sparks, my new holster finally arrived. The fresh smell of leather is unlike any other smell :-) I sat in my living room with an unloaded Glock 19 in one hand and the Versa Max in the other and started putting some wear on it. It was a very snug fit so I was trying to loosen it up a bit. My wife simply gave me odd looks as I continually holstered and drew the unloaded firearm while watching some television.

At that time, the one thing that stopped me from wearing my newly acquired holster is that I didn’t have a 1.5 inch belt to go with it. I’m planning on getting a high quality belt from possibly TedBlocker, but don’t have the financial resources quite yet. While cleaning out our emergency box (clothing, food, etc) in our van the other day, I came across a generic genuine leather belt that was 1.5 inches wide and fit me well. It wasn’t black like I wanted, but it would do for now.

Today (March 28, 2011), I’m officially testing out the Versa Max 2 on a no-name brand belt with a Glock 19. Read more about my full experience in the near future!

I’d like to make a suggestion, although it may be to late? I too use a Kholster, with a good set of sharp scissors I custom cut my full moon to something that I could get a proper grip on my gun. Basically I put my gun into the Kholster and used a sharpie and traced around the outline of my gun, cut it and it works wonderfully. I’m not sure if you’ll go back to the Kholster but it’s well worth the try. Hope it helps…….
